The GI Cancers Alliance conducted a nationwide six-week survey and focus group initiative during the summer of 2020 to gain a better understanding of the patient experience and perspective regarding clinical trial participation in the midst of COVID-19. Exploring clinical trial participation in the new normal of COVID-19 helped us gain a better understanding of the patient perspective and additional barriers of trial participation during a pandemic., In addition, our survey and interviews also shed light on the increased challenges, inequities, cultural and historical viewpoints of ethnically diverse communities regarding trial participation. Based on our survey and interview findings the GI Cancers Alliance will launch a Health Equity, Diversity & Inclusion in Cancer Care and Clinical Trials Program. The importance of culturally appropriate outreach, education and patient engagement for medically underserved communities is essential as we work toward equitable access to healthcare for all.
